At MCQ we have a dedicated Skills For Life team who will prepare you for taking Nationally recognized qualifications
such as
· Key skills Communication and/or Application
of Number Tests at Level One or Level Two within the Apprenticeship Programme
· Adult Literacy and/or Numeracy
Tests at Level One or level Two.within the Train to Gain Programme
What are Skills For Life qualifications?
They are Nationally recognised Adult Literacy and Numeracy qualifications. The Key skills
End Tests ARE the same tests, but not awarded without the portfolio.
Do they have an equivalent level of ability with any other qualifications?
Yes, Level 2 achievement says you are working at the same
level as a G.C.S.E. a-c grade.
Level 1 achievement says you are working at the same level
as a G.C.S.E. d-g grade.
What do they have to do with my NVQ?
Key Skills - having gained the skills to pass the end tests,
embedded and contextualized learning takes place whereby Portfolio evidence is produced for both the Key skills, Technical
Certificate and NVQ qualifications within an Apprenticeship Framework.
Adult Literacy / Numeracy – Brushing up on your Skills for Life will enable you to produce better evidence
for your NVQ Portfolio.
Why would anyone want to achieve them?
To progress in your chosen career and/or move into further/higher
education you may need to prove your ability in respect of writing skills and/or working with numbers. Normally this would
mean having G.C.S.E. a-c in English and/or Math's.
You may have left school without having the opportunity to do these exams. You may, for whatever reason, not have achieved
the grades you would have liked. You could “go back to school or college” and get those G.C.S.E. grades or you could achieve the Key skills Levels 1 and 2 or Adult
Literacy / Numeracy Levels 1 and 2 which would open the door to other qalifications.
How would I achieve them?
If your Initial Assessment indicates the
need to “brush up” on your Literacy or Numeracy Skills then a member of the Skills for Life team would discuss
the option of additional support with you and offer to work with you on an individual basis.
One to one-and-a-half-hour appointments are booked either during working hours (with the permission of your
employer) or outside your working hours at an agreed location.
Tuition is carried out to fill skill gaps and to practice test taking at the required level.
The tests themselves could be paper based (dates set by the Examining Board and completed at MCQ) or completed
on a laptop computer at a time and location to suit you.
You will know of your success on the day!
